december 1st

Halfway through Saturday I suddenly noticed that it was the first of December. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper December first without a tree, decorations or an advent calender. So out came the slightly tacky white tree, last years advent calender and two big boxes of ornaments.

I thought it best to keep it pretty simple this year with a very curious toddler running around, but I still wanted to have a tree (despite the other half advising otherwise), so I left most of my vintage baubles in their boxes for another year. Out came the bag of kitschy angels and elves (a recent op shop find), and satin baubles (passed on from a relative), though a few glass ones did make it to the tree. I am hoping for the best, as the odds do not look terribly good with the combination of a little girl who loves shiny pretty things, and a concrete floor. But so far so good.

A few little decorations dotted on the cabinet, and it looks to be done. Only the lights waiting to be connected now.  There is space for a few handmade pieces that I'm halfway through. Though I can't say that I didn't derive much pleasure from the decorating. No doubt it is that inner child in me.

Does your inner child come out at christmas too?
Do you enjoy the christmas decorating as much, (if not more!) than the kids?
Is your tree up?

  1. I love, love, love decorating for the holidays and everything here is done, except the tree. Since we don't use an artificial tree, we go out and buy ours about two weeks before Christmas. I'm so looking forward to decorating it... :-)
    Your vintage decorations are beautiful!

  3. Gorgeous Tania. I planned on putting out tree up on the 1st, but I haven't got to it yet. We have a live tree that needs to be repotted before coming inside. This is what's holding me up. xxoo

  4. I love Chistmas and go mad decorating the house. Was hoping to put the tree up over the weekend but my daughters busy social life has put this plan on hold till tonight when she will be home. She loves the decorating like I do. Happy December Tania! x

  5. I think the vintage glass baubles look beautiful in the dish, I do that too...I always, always seem to break one of my beautiful ones each year, they are just so fragile, and that is with me being careful as well, and no concrete floor! I cant part with them, they are put back in the box with their pretty front showing and the hole in the back hidden....for me putting xmas decorations up is bringing childhood memories to life.....

  8. Our tree went up on Saturday too. It's a family tradition to decorate it together, wearing silly Santa hats and with Christmas carols playing.
Your tree and decorations look lovely.

  9. The kids were hanging out for Saturday to put the tree up, though it is looking rather bare at the moment as we can't seem to locate all the decorations.
I love all your kitschy decorations Tania.

  12. love your tree and your advent calendar! I only just got the advent calendar up in time. We try to go sweet free and do an activity, but with one at school it seems a bit harder now. i adore your ornaments, and yes, i love the spirit of Christmas and decking the house in all it's glory x

  13. This is our second Christmas without the wooden playpen set up around the Christmas tree to stop the destruction wreaked on the lower levels by my then toddlers.

  14. Oh, my inner child comes out when decorating the tree! Most of the ornaments are from my childhood which probably helps foster that feeling. Your holiday decorations are so lovely! That advent calender is especially great. Yay for the holidays!

  15. Oh yes... Things must look festive around the Hearth Room. And, like you, I have a curious toddler that I am avoiding glass ornaments for. Out came lots of wonky, plastic, or handmade baubles. Yours look lovely! I'm liking that white tree.

  16. Lovely tree Tania! We put ours up on Sunday because there was nothing left of me on Saturday after trimming the hedge in the heat. My wife and I like to put on some old skool christmas music, have a dance, eat fruit mince pies and have a sniffter of port or muscat as we decorate.

  17. I'm guilty of being a big kid too that's for sure. Our tree went up on December 1st with our multicoloured collection of decorations made and given, it's a bit hokey pokey but we love it. xx

  18. Beautiful!

Cohen went down for a nap with only a couple of decorations on the tree and woke up to find it finished, save for the star on top - which is his job. His Aunt and I did the whole lot, then we all went to her house and did her tree too! I loved decorating the tree as a child, grew out of it, then grew back in to it once I had Cohen. Funny how that happens. :)

  21. What beautiful Christmas ornaments! The cone shaped angel is just like the one we had on my childhood Christmas tree and it brings back such great memories.
