I think it was the cooler air this weekend that prompted us to get out into the garden on Sunday.
Sending caution to the wind after last years disappointing seed sewing, and popped in some Tendersweet carrots and Lollo Rossa lettuce (from here) in a fresh layer of compost.
Wondering what to do about the snail problem.
Daniel planted some pencil pines (bought from the local markets) in the front garden. I think they give it a bit for shape and structure. I think we've had pencil pines in each house we've lived in. Can you tell this boy's family comes from Rome?
I don't know about you, but I always feel good after I've been in the garden. A bit like free therapy.

ReplyDeleteCrushed egg shells are supposed to deter snails, as they don't like to crawl over them. And I recall that bowls of beer are supposed to attract and drown them. Some plants also repel them. Perhaps worth a try?
Was just about to say egg shells too.. I found that you need quite a lot and then sprinkle them all around the base of the plant.. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteOurs spent in the garden too! No snail problem here, just caterpillars everywhere - kids love them and I know they look cute BUT I like my beans more!!!
ReplyDeleteI did a spot of gardening too this weekend! The weather was lovely!After years of a wonderful vegie garden, this year, no good! Hot weather, snails, other creepy crawlies and rats have got our vegies! So sad! Don't know what to do!!

ReplyDeleteGetting out in the garden always brings me a good feeling of satisfaction and getting back to simple things. It was rainy here so gardening was given a miss. That row of pencil pines will look beautiful when they are grown.x
ReplyDeleteYour post makes me wish we had a garden. I love those pencil pines - I think you have made the world a better place by putting them in every place you have lived. But that may just be me (and my three years in Italy + the Italian husband).

ReplyDeleteHave you tried beer traps for controlling the snails, or sending the kids out with torches at night to catch them?

Also maybe creating habitat areas for snail eaters- like rocky areas for lizards and ponds for frogs. x
ReplyDeleteI don't think snails like copper or some metals. You could take out both ends of a tin and use this as a collar around young plants until they mature and become stronger.

We got out into the garden too on the weekend with the cooler weather...and then the rain watered everything in which was perfect!

gardening is the best therapy - mind, body, soul, both my nannas lived until their late 90s and gardened most days.
