happy weekend

I've been reading The Happiness Project of late, which I'd heard good things about on Christina's blog. I'm almost finished, and though I could probably write enough about this book to fill a whole blog post, we'll just stick to a snippet today. One thing in particular that struck me was the idea that if we think about what the hobbies we enjoyed doing as a child, it's not too far off the mark from what we enjoy now. In my own case, I can see that my interests in reading, writing, crafting, (I remember doing latch hook and needlepoint landscapes), fashion, scrap books and drawing. Some of which I still do now, some of which I don't, though I feel that the interest still lies there, waiting for the right time to come out again.

In other weekendy news I've been weeding the vegie garden. Pulling out lots of weeds, stray silverbeet and dividing a few strawberries.  I had many empty pots hanging around, and an oil tin, so some were filled with a few succulents or with a few vegies to keep close to the house, when I don't feel like walking all the way to the garden. Ornamental and practical. A trial verandah pot of strawberries, chives and basil last year was very successful.

A quick stop at the op shop on Saturday resulted in the finding of two vintage wrap skirts. You have to love something that you know you don't need to try on. I haven't seen these around for awhile, and at two dollars each for a brown floral and a tribal print I left the shop quite happy.

On Daniel's weekly trip to the small local tip, he was given an old skateboard. Our tip is a good place for little things like this. He's come home with an old wheelbarrow, bikes and a few other unusual things in the past. It's far too small for a shop, but it's a community that's big on recycling, so anything useful will go to someone. I do like that.

And you? How was your weekend? Have you read the Happiness Project? Did you get out in the garden?

Wishing you all a pleasant start to the week.

  1. I love it that your new posts seem to pop up when I sit down for my cuppa after having put the boys down for their afternoon sleep - thank you! Am starting to do more in the garden. It is starting to flower and all sorts of amazing flowers are coming out of hiding. Our trees are starting to bear fruit - it is a guessing game as to what they are at the moment. We have only been here since March.....

  2. I read the happiness project recently too. i was heartened as i felt i did a lot of the suggested tactics already, but the thing that stayed me was the prosaic 'if a job is going to take less than a minute do it right now'. it really has made a big difference for me, i feel so much more organised and the house seems tidier without extra effort and the chorus of "where my...." has died down to a whisper! phew! we've been in the garden too, putting down grass seed and weeding, weeding, weeding. wish we had your view, gosh it looks lovely and a long view is so good for the eyes (and soul) x

  3. I've reserved it at the library. Was hoping it would be ready for when I go away with my husband on Wednesday for three nights on our own without the children (first time ever), but alas... Hearing lots of good things about it...

  4. That book sounds interesting. It is true, for me, that my hobbies when I was young are still what I enjoy now, gardeing, cross-stitch (not that I have done any for a while), baking and sewing.
Looks like you had a very lovely weekend. My weekend was perfect, a lot of home time, thrifting, gardening and sewing.
    Have a lovely week too.

  5. I haven't read that book, but I will check it out at the library. I love the tips too--though now if you want to bring home something , like a bike etc, you have to pay for it. :(

  6. I'm glad you are enjoying the book. You never know if something you love others will love too. Lots of weeding in my veggie patch too, and lots of picking as well - cherry tomatoes, spinach, silver beet and snow peas. More seeds have gone in and I'm waiting for the Roma and Black Russian tomatoes to ripen now. :)

  8. The hobbies when we were young comment really struck me... it is true! Now, I love gardening, sewing, reading and am interested in knitting. When I was young, I wanted to learn to garden because I wanted to grow food for my pet rabbit, I loved knitting and reading. I was interested in sewing my never sewed myself but I always loved making things for people which I love doing now. I now can sew and when I have time I do so. I must read this book...

  10. I read that book at the start of the year and found it uplifting and inspirational. Need to re read it I think to keep myself on track. Love the suggestion near the end to " gaze lovingly" on the children when asleep and also"that the days are long but the years are short". There have been many many long complicated days at our place but even if there is only a crumb of goodness i will squirrel it away and remember in the blink of an eye they will be off at uni. Equally love that pillowcase too, I have the same one in both the blue and pink colour ways and it is my fave. mel x

  14. thanks for the recommendation, i need a good book and i like the sound of that one. I just ordered it online. I used to live in the country for many years and it can be hard to get your hands on books you're looking for - thought i'd let you know about the book depository. it's a UK online shop, but sends everything postage free around the world, and they're CHEAP. i ordered alot of my son's text books from them. The happiness project was like $8.50 or something. good deals if you're hunting for a book.
love your blog too btw : )

  15. I've not yet heard of this book, but it looks right up my alley. Of course, I already have a to-read list a mile long, but what is one more!!! There are SO many good books to read in this world.

What is a tip? I've a impression of it from the context of your post, but I'm not sure. I could probably google it, but why not go right to the source?

We spend the weekend spending some time out in the garden, though we are on the autumn clean-up, wind-down end of things. We cut and stacked wood for the stove--a very satisfying project on a sunny autumn day.
