in black and white

I lay awake last night thinking about things. About how fast time really does fly. How fast kid's grow up. How fast our life disappears before our very eyes. How we're not as young as we once were.

Too deep perhaps to get into for a bright, sunny morning midweek post.

On a lighter note awhile back I began printing black and white photos. I've been collecting cheap and unattractive frames at the op shop. Painting them black with spray paint. Two quick coats.

I knew that what was missing in this house was our memories.

There's not many up there yet, but I look forward to adding quite a few more to that wall.

Hoping that yours is a good day.

  1. my biggest fear is not being here to see the world go by. if i think too much about it i start to get very anxious. time does go by at a rate it seems we cannot keep up with some days. enjoy now. your photos are a beautiful reminder. you will have that wall filled in no time. xo

  2. I know what you mean by your first paragraph and I think the only thing we can do is to slow down, keep things simple, not get too caught up in all the 1001 gadgets available, not being slaves to our phones etc and live a simpler life.

Gorgeous photos! Do you mind me asking where the first big photo is at? It looks beautifully old!!

  3. Hi Simone , after a google search to match up the windows (I couldn't remember where in Sydney exactly it was taken) I do believe it is St Andrews Cathedral which sits alongside the town hall. Here's the link :

  5. I have those same kinds of thoughts often. We are about to move house and I want to have heaps of family photos on our walls,,,,we plan to make this our house for quite a while so why not make our family stamp on it lol. Your idea of spray painting cheap frames is fantastic,,,,I might use that idea myself if thats okay :)

The black and white pics look fantastic too. Can't wait to see your updates as you add more photos to your wall!

  6. ooh, lovely! Last week I printed off three b/w pics - one for each of our daughters and had to hunt to find black frames. I love your use of the op-shopped frames, they tie together so well and the different textures of each frame add interest!

The only challenge now is to find the wall space, aghh!! :)

  7. It is amazing what a coat of paint can do, your wall already looks gorgeous and full of love :)
I agree also about time slipping by. In our house my husband and I are trying to stop for a hug each day. Seems like something we used to take for granted but now often doesn't happen due to shift work and life.

  9. Just lovely Tania. I adore B&W photos. I think the fact that they aren't in colour actually makes you focus more on what's in the photo and the people behind it. Nothing beats them for nostalgia. Do they cost more to print than colour?

  11. So true about life disappearing quickly. I turned 40 this year and thought it wasn't going to be a big deal but I think it has had more impact than I expected it would. I try to savour and enjoy every moment and try to prioritise what's important.

I love your photo wall. I have a family wall similar. Some of my photos are getting quite old so I should add some extra ones with more up to date photos.

  14. Looks great Tania! The other week I nominated you as one of my favourite blogs and passed on the reader appreciation award/versatile blogger. It's a bit like chain mail for bloggers so don't feel obliged to take part! Just wanted to let you know I look forward to your posts! 16. I know what you mean about time passing way too quickly.
I am discovering and trying to practice mindfulness. I have found this helps me when I fell like time is going too fast.
I love your idea of spray painting ugly frames black to reuse. I think I'll try it myself, inspired by your success!

  17. Oh...time. Yes, it does pass quickly. The more grey hairs I find, the more I realize how full my life has been up to this point & I'm only 35!

I love your black & whites! A couple of years ago, in our guest room, my partner and I took our favorite family photos (her mom when she was modeling, my dad when he was 4, our grandparents), turned any that were't black & white into b&w and framed them all in cheap black frames. They decorate the wall behind the guest bed and are a nice welcome to any family that come to stay with us :-)

  19. Very true about time. I've been thinking a lot about that lately, too. I'll be 40 at the end of the year, and the shocker is how fast the last 20 years went by! It takes effort to not let fear and sadness creep in and take hold.

  20. Ooooh, I like it! (The frames, not how fast life goes by!)

I buy used and mismatched frames, but for some reason it'd never occurred to me to paint them more attractively.

Matt and I made a career choice yesterday that I hope will be for the best. In the end I am positive we will be happier, if poorer, but life is too short not to seize upon the happiness.

And I've said it before and I'll say it again: Your children are precious! That one with the tongues out! My! : )

  25. Love what you've done Tania - photos are so important to make a home feel warm and lived in. I have a photo wall here but only with black and white photos but the other day, I was thinking I want to update it with family photos and memories. Seeing yours makes me even more eager to do so. That first photo is a really pretty shot of you x
