artwork cluster

I thought I would share with you all a new little spot on my kitchen wall that has not failed to put a smile on my face this week. It is not a new idea, by any means. But it is original in it's artwork, as all little displays of kid's artwork are.

 

I had, at the back of a cupboard, a number of vintage frames. I had been intending to paint them all black. But in the end I decided to leave them just the way they were. Does anyone else struggle with the idea of painting over a gilt frame? I have, so far, never brought myself to do it, as I find there is a faded sense of opulence in an aged gilt frame. As for the white frames, they had taken on a shabby kind of look all on their own.


So I raided the two shoe boxes full of Luca and Julia's artwork highlights from the past few years, and came up with, what I thought, to be an interesting and colourful assortment.


Sadly, I had to cut them down a bit. 


And luckily there is plenty of space for more...

    I like to leave old frames as they are too. A wonderful idea. It would bring a smile to my face too.

    What a lovely way to display your kids artwork. I have a nasty faux tasmanian oak laminate pantry wall that faces into my lounge and I have blu tacked as much of Roboboy's art on as I can possibly fit. He has then blu tacked the rest of his artwork over his ENTIRE room so it looks like an " art gallery" (thanks giggle and hoot for that one). I love your table runner by the way- presume you made that one? Oh yes, i've never painted a gilt frame either. melx

    Very pretty. I have some of my son's childhood art work that I've been wanting to frame as well - perhaps I will pull them out to see what size frames that I need for them. Thanks for the inspiration.

    it looks amazing! I often put Che's artwork up around the house, usually attached to string with little wooden pegs. I don't think a muma can ever tire of their child's creativity.

    One thing that Che's Montessori teacher advised me to say in regard to his artwork is: "tell me about your drawing" as opposed to "is this a house" - apparently it's a fabulous way to encourage articulation and description.

    As a teacher, I have a real thing for kid's art work and there is no better way to show you value what they do, than by displaying it. Looks like a wonderful display as well. Best wishes and have a great weekend,

    Ahhh, to paint or not to paint, I posted on this very subject because I was so conflicted. In the end, I did paint as the frames had been bought for my daughter's room and the gilt wasn't doing it for her, which is fair enough.

    So it came down to keeping the vintage frames as is to use elsewhere in the house, paint them or buy new ones from Ikea. So we painted. Console myself that we reused existing materials.

    Clearly, I'm still trying to convince myself I did the right thing!

    They look gorgeous, I have a few thrifted frames that aren't filled so may give this a go. I like the way you've grouped them, and am quite a fan of faded gilt myself, although there's nothing wrong with painting a really hideous frame!
